The Rolling Stones opened with Start Me Up and closed the debate

18 songs in Houston to open the Hackney Diamonds tour, with three new songs, the live debut of Mess It Up, and Little T&A for the first time since 2016.

Eighteen songs in Houston and the Stones sounded like a band with something to prove. Start Me Up opened the Hackney Diamonds tour last night at NRG Stadium, and from there it was hit after hit after hit.

Three songs from the new record made it in. Angry, Sweet Sounds of Heaven, and the live debut of Mess It Up. Out of Time got its first ever US performance. Beast of Burden won the fan vote. And Keith took the mic for Little T&A, which they had not played since 2016.

The back half was a victory lap. Sympathy for the Devil, Gimme Shelter, Honky Tonk Women, Miss You, Paint It Black, Jumpin' Jack Flash, then Satisfaction to close. Steve Jordan and Darryl Jones kept the whole thing locked down while Jagger vamped his way across Texas.

Next stop is Jazz Fest on May 2. There will come a day when they cannot do this anymore. It is not this day.
