Most AI video tools rent you a seat in somebody else's data center. Mago Studio just went the other way. The Mago team open-sourced the whole studio on November 2 under the AGPL-3.0 license, and the local mode is free, runs on your own graphics card, and needs no account to start.
The build is a desktop app, Electron and Next.js under the hood, that renders through ComfyUI version 0.34 or newer on your GPU, with an optional Mago Cloud route if your machine is not up to it. The installer defaults to the MiniMax H3 video model and the Qwen3-VL 4B vision model. Two modes do the work: Mago Director assembles video from a script, and Mago Transform handles video-to-video processing.
“A creator who owns the machine owns the render queue, and the footage never leaves the building.”

The honest fine print matters. Mago is an orchestrator, not a new model: it wires already published open weights into a production desk. The public repository was created the same day as the announcement and started small, 39 stars and 8 forks at launch, so this is an early release, not a finished empire.
Still, the direction is worth watching. A creator who owns the machine owns the render queue, the footage never leaves the building, and the monthly bill for drafts drops to the electric bill. That is a real shift from the subscription-everything model the big platforms are selling.
