YouTube bets on microdramas, and X starts paying for vertical video

YouTube has launched dedicated microdrama subscriptions so creators can sell member-only episodes of short serialized shows, while X opened an invite-only Video Kickstart Bonus that pays creators for original vertical video.

The platforms spent the week putting money and product behind short vertical storytelling. YouTube launched dedicated microdrama subscriptions, a membership tier built for the short serialized dramas that have already pulled billions of views on the platform. Creators can now post member-only episodes, and YouTube is pointing them at its auto-translation tools to carry those shows into other languages and markets. The company also published guidance on what makes microdrama content work.

X made its own move for the same footage. Its new Video Kickstart Bonus is invite-only for now, and it pays creators a bonus for posting their own short-form vertical videos on X. Read that again: a platform that spent years as a text feed is now paying cash to pull vertical video away from TikTok, Reels, and Shorts.

“Every major platform is now paying, protecting, or building product for short serialized vertical video.”

Smaller print, same direction: YouTube is also adjusting its spam policy enforcement so accounts that get unfairly reported are less likely to eat a ban. Anyone who has fought a bad-faith report knows that fix is overdue.

The pattern is the story. Every major platform is now paying, protecting, or building product for short serialized vertical video. If you make it, your bargaining power is the footage itself, and right now everybody is bidding.
